Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur: A Truly Spicy Narrative

prescott van meyer the third sommelier from home in today’s episode we will be reviewing anchorage ancho chile liquor so the first thing i noticed about this product is what a delightful bottle it is they also gave you a little booklet here how to make some uh different cocktails yourself using this product now what is this product exactly well it is a cane sugar liqueur infused with ancho chilies and as we all know ancho chiles are simply sun-dried poblanos and if you didn’t know that well now you do and maybe get a little bit of culture in your life and isn’t that what this is all about just getting more and more culture be it high culture or low culture infused into our daily lives be it pizza flavored beer or pickled beer or cotton candy seltzer or tabasco and whiskey broadening our horizons one beverage at a time so these recipes are great but obviously we don’t need them for this episode we are going to be tasting it straight i’m excited to see what a sugar cane liqueur tastes like uh just all on its own with the infusion of the ancho chilis wondering how spicy this is gonna get or as they say how muy caliente it’ll get my gastro says i should not be doing any hard liquors or spicy foods so it’s a double whammy today a double whammy in my guts nobody tells me how to live my life while i entertain pb3 nation except pv3 nation tell me what you guys want i want to deliver i’m here for you and your acceptance means everything because it’s all i got back to the drink as i said it’s an absolutely charming bottle they have a little bit of a narrative on back to let you know been around for a long time this recipe it’s about 100 years old this is a mexican product and comes in at a hefty 40 alcohol or 80 proof and it’s got all sorts of safety seals on top to let you know it hasn’t been tampered with got the plastic seal they got the paper sticker seal and they also got the screw top on it so let’s begin the process of opening this [Music] very molasses-like molasses-y i don’t know love that glug boy i’m in a chipper mood today see about two weeks ago i had lost five dollars and i just recently found it in my ashtray that’s right my car still has ashtrays i make no apologies for my frugal lifestyle boy it’s fragrant i’m smelling that cane sugar liqueur got a nice molasses very rich caramel really like that and those poblano chilis sun dried and roasted feel like i’m walking through an acienda telling the porters to ready my horses i seek to go on the trail and find solace in the desert shirt unbuttoned flowing in the wind on my way to taco bell for a third and fourth doritos locos taco is it fourth meal yet one day i’m gonna be able to have fourth meals again one day right now i’m at one to two meals a day but uh there’s a lot of vegetable oil in those meals so i’m getting my calories folks i gotta say it’s a really nice rich flavor the peppers aren’t overpowering like some other products like tabasco whiskey it doesn’t seem like they’re trying to hit you over the head with the ancho chiles they’re just trying to make something that’s uh interesting and unique liking this one so far feels like i just took some mdma into loom looking up at the great tree houses wondering what it’s all about are those trees breathing it looks like they’re breathing we’re all connected also just peppers just fire roasted peppers let’s give it a taste so some heat and then the heat stays with you a little bit in the mouth i’m not crying it’s just the way the natural olfactory ducts are working really nice the spice is not overpowering but it’s not subtle either it’s like you’re really enjoying it i’m not crying i’m still happy i found that five dollars that’s a lot of fourth meals and in my case a second meal [Music] the cane sugar liqueur obviously very very sweet and that smokiness and that spiciness from the pepper certainly there i’m enjoying this neat but i can see it doing very well in a cocktail adding a little bit of heat to it tastes like a mexican love story a telenovela what would my telenovela story be like you know who would play me you’d have the hero vivi tres you have the the villain carlos wick give me my vig trying to save my abuelita and tia keren do i succeed write in the comments if i do climactic scene where the hero is trying to prevent harm from coming to his lover abigail [Music] see that’s how you apologize you just say you’re sorry that’s how you do it you just say it once well i guess i kind of got lost in the narrative there who would be drinking this well spice heads villains named carlos vic or anyone who is ignoring the recommendations of their gastroenterologist [Music] i don’t have insurance anyway so probably going to keep ignoring his advice and his calls seems i owe his office a little bit of money so for my rating i’m giving nacho reyes a 74. this complex and unique flavor really took me places started a narrative that was irresistible and tragic no shocker there par for the course tell a novella of my life [Music] you
