intercession and example we may proclaim the living christ and come to see him reigning in your glory who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the song of songs the bride says this on my bed at night i saw him whom my heart loves i saw but did not find him so i will rise and go through the city in the streets and in the squares i will seek him whom my heart loves i sought but did not find him the watchman came upon me on the runs in the city i was seeing him who my heart loves scarcely as i pass them may form him when my heart loves the word of the lord thanks be to god for you my soul is thirsting lord my god for you my son is destined o lord my god oh god you’re my god for you i long for you my soul is first thing my body pants for you like a dry merry lamb without water for you my soul is thirsting o lord oh my god so i gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory for your love is better than life my lips will speak your praise for you my soul is thirsting o lord and my god so i will bless you all my life in the name i will lift up my hands my soul shall fill with the banquet my mouth shall praise you with joy for you my soul is thirsting o lord oh my god for you have been my help and the shadow of the winds i rejoice my soul claims to you your right hand holds me fast for you my soul is thirsting o lord my god i saw christ’s glory as he rose hallelujah the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john lord it was very early on the first day of the week and still dark when mary of mandela came to the tomb she saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb and came running to simon simon peter and the other disciple the one jesus loved then they have they have taken the lord out of the tomb she said and we do not know where they have put him meanwhile mary stood outside near the tomb weeping then still whipping she stooped and looked inside and saw two angels in white sitting there where the body of jesus had been one at the head the other at the feet they said woman why are you weeping they have taken my lord away she replied and i do not know where they have put him as she said this she turned round and saw jesus standing there though she did not recognize him jesus said woman why are you weeping who are you looking for supposing him to be the gardener she said sir if you have taken him away tell me where you have put him and i will go and remove him and jesus said mary she knew him then and said to him in re-hebrew rabboni which means master jesus said to her do not cling to me because i have not yet ascended to to the father but go and find the brothers and tell them i am ascending to my father and to your father to my god and to your god so mary of magdala went and told the disciples that she had seen the lord and that he had said these things to her the gospel of the lord they praise you lord jesus christ from sinner to saint the story of saint mary magdalene is prominently situated in the gospel of luke in chapter 7 from verse 36 to 48. although biblical scholars are uncertain that the woman mentioned louis mary magdalene the content of the story fits perfectly her situation the story reads this one of the pharisees invited jesus to a meal when he arrived at the pharisees house he took his place a table a woman came in who had a bad name in the town she had heard he was dining with a pharisee and had brought with her an alabaster jar with ointment she waited behind him at his feet weeping and the tears fell on his feet and she went them away with her hair then she covered his feet with kisses and anointed them with the ointment when the pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself if this man were a prophet he would know who this woman is that is touching him and what a bad name she has then jesus took him up and said simon i have something to say to you speak master was the reply there was once a creditor who had two men in his debt one owed him 500 denarii the other 50. they were unable to pay so he pardoned them both which of them will love him more the one who was pardoned more i suppose on satsang and jesus said you’re right then he turned to the woman simon he said you see this woman i came into your house and you poured no water over my feet but she has poured out she poured pour out of tears on my feet and wiped them away with her hair you gave me no kiss but she has been covering my feet with kisses ever since i came in you did not anoint my head with oil but she has anointed my feet with ointment for this reason i tell you that her sins her many sins must have been forgiven her or she would not have shown such great love it is the man who is forgiven little who shows little love then he said to her your sins are forgiven luke chapter 7 verse 36 to 48. this story expresses the role that mary magdalene plays in the life of the whole church she stands as one of the greatest symbols of hope for a sinful humanity essentially fulfills the purpose for which jesus came that is the forgiveness of ourselves we live within a world culture which is quicker to condemn than to love affirm and forgive we are quick to see faults in others and to hold it against them there is absolutely no evidence in the gospels of jesus condemning any sinner except those who believed they were better than others such as the scribes and the pharisees being at the receiving end of god’s mercy and generosity mary magdalene stands as a symbol of the greatest aspiration of all humanity representing the transformation from sinner to saint i think each one of us wishes to be a saint the truth is we can and we ought to aspire to become one our very practice of the faith is such an indication mary magdalene helps us to deepen our appreciation of that possibility mary magdalene had found love in jesus christ this explains why in today’s gospel she was among the first to visit the tomb on resurrection morning the new lease on life which he had found in jesus lingered on it was one which she absolutely did not want to let go of her memory of that unconditional and non-judgmental love which she encountered in jesus christ had her wanting to cling she represents or she presents to the church a disposition which we absolutely need for salvation in the story quoted above we see the woman suffering the pains of sin the pains of condemnation of scorn of verbal abuse of condescension and the like in fact the pharisee who invited jesus to die with him represented some of those sentiments he said to himself if this man were a prophet he would know who this woman is who is touching him and what a bad name she has luke chapter 7 verse 39 yet with the assurance that jesus’s attention afforded mary magdalene was humble enough to accept her sinful state and move towards the most genuine source of encouragement that ever presented itself to her that is the love of the lord himself the humility of mary magdalene in the quoted text is very instructive seeing such an act of love and remorse in her weeping at his feet jesus could see nothing except your sins have forgiven you jesus wishes desperately to say the same to each one of us mary magdalene did not miss her chance to encounter the god of compassion she experienced god’s word she experienced god’s mercy and his love that which transformed her from sinner to say it my dear friends in mary magdalene we see the effects of the power of god’s love and forgiveness the basic ingredients for transformation from a sinner to saint this is the gift of today’s feast to each one of us so let us pray therefore asking god for the grace of a humble disposition let me remind amen transmission from sinner to saint this is our quest and our destiny let us pray for the grace to achieve it come lord jesus come lord jesus with all the holy women let us praise our savior and call on him in prayer come lord jesus lord jesus you said of the woman who was a sinner her many sins are forgiven because she has loved much grant us your forgiveness for all before all others with announcing the great joy of the resurrection grant we pray that through her intercession and example we may proclaim the living christ and come to see him reigning in your glory who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the son of the bride says on my bed at night i sought him whom my heart loves i sought him but i did not find him i will rise then and go about the city in the streets and crossings i will seek him whom my heart loves i sought him but i did not find him the watchmen came upon me as they made the lord my you are my help and in the shadow of your wings i shout for joy my soul clings fast to you your right hand upholds me my soul is foreign hallelujah tell us mary what did you see on the way i saw the glory of the risen christ i saw his empty tool hallelujah hallelujah lord turns my heart and my lips on the first day of the week mary magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning while it was still dark and saw the stone removed from the tomb so she ran and went to simon peter and to the other disciple whom jesus loved and told them they have taken the lord from the tomb and we don’t know where they put him mary stayed outside the two weeping and as she wept she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there one at the head and one at the feet where the body of jesus had been and they said to her woman why are you weeping she said to them they have taken my lord and i don’t know where they lead him when she had said this she turned around and saw jesus there but did not know it was jesus jesus said to her woman why are you weeping whom are you looking for she thought it was the gardener and said to him sir if you carried him away tell me where you lead him and i will take him jesus said to her mary she turned and said to him in hebrew rabbuni which means teacher jesus said to her stop holding on to me for i have not yet ascended to the father but go to my brothers and tell them i am going to my father and your father to my god and your god mary magdalene went and announced through the disciples i have seen the lord and then reported what he told her the gospel of the lord please do lord jesus christ from the song of songs you don’t hear very much from that particular book of the bible but today we here in the cause of the feast of mary magdalene memorial mary magdalene and it’s all about human and divine love i like the line at the end i had hardly left them when i found him whom my heart loves obviously the heart that loves seeks and wants to find the beloved i believe my dear friends everyone who says i love god should have a heart that is seeking that kind of love to seek the one that i love i mean humanly speaking when someone is in love they consume the thoughts of the other when they hear the voice something happens to them and we see them even more happens to them because somehow there’s a yearning there is a yearning to be to be one to be together with the other and i really believe that that’s what we should be about in terms of our love for god which of course is translated into the love of our neighbor to find the one whom my heart loves and of course in the gospel reading the post-resurrection story of the woman going to the tomb and not finding the lord and mary magdalene being prominent among women she runs and tells the others he’s not there and then the lord appears to her what strikes me here is that she recognizes him when he speaks the voice has something as you know dear friends very often when you receive a phone call you don’t necessarily see the other of the nominees you can’t see the other but ordinarily you would hear the voice and you’ll recognize the voice when you know someone well enough they don’t i have to ask you do you know who is speaking you know automatically because you recognize that voice that’s a familiar voice that is someone you know on the other hand if it’s a stranger they have to identify themselves and see what i’m so calling such as such a place and this is what i’m looking for so hopefully but when you know the voice there’s no need to identify the voice is already the identification and jesus says mary she tells you and says ah it is him it is the lord and of course she must have run upon him and clone to him and says don’t hold on to me too fast because i’m not yet to send it to my father but go and tell the others that you’ve seen me that is why she’s referred to as the apostle of the apostles she’s the one who goes with the message of the resurrection i have seen him he’s alive but to go back there friends to the image of love and being in love i think again that’s what we’re all called to be to be in love with the lord himself and to allow him to be the one who our heart seeks more than anything else in the world of course there are many who think that what they seek is pleasure at all cause what they seek is fame what they seek is property and wealth prosperity but you know none of these things really fill the heart as the song goes only jesus can satisfy my soul so people marry and remarry they find this job and they find another they go to this place they go to another always seeking because the endless search of the heart is really for god so the gospel will see it differently he says you made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until the rest in you to find him whom my heart sees and i believe my dear friends when we recognize that then we understand why nothing else can really fill us completely no one else can really feel us completely there’s always something like him no matter how much we come to the other there’s always something lacking until we find the lord himself he will continue searching may we find him whom our heart loves amen so we stand and pray for the church throughout the world for all those who are seeking god for all those who are dissatisfied with their lot in life they will find satisfaction in finding their true love jesus christ so lord hear us for the nations of the world especially where there is confusion and conflict where there is disharmony that there may be peace through justice lord hear us lord gracious with us for all those for whom we have promised to pray today for all those for whom we ought to pray in charity my friend who’s celebrating her birthday today the lord we grant her all the blessings that she desires in her life she has a sense of fulfillment having found the one who her heart loves for all others that they too will find their christ and their beloved lord yes the lord wishes for an end to the pandemic an end to all the suffering of the world lord hear us god wishes for ourselves but like mary magdalene would seek the one whom our heart loves and make him truly our beloved lord hear us we pause so that in the silence of our hearts we might include other intentions almighty god and father hear the prayers of your children grant us what we ask in faith through jesus christ our lord blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed be god for this truth in you lord christ of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual dream the humble spirit and contract will be received for me pray my dear sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord have the sacrifice at your hearts foreign accept oh lord the offerings presented in commemoration of saint mary magdalene whose homage of charity was graciously accepted by your only begotten son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you and if you ask me lift up your heart let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you are praised in the company of your saints and in crowning your merits in crowning their merits you crown your own gifts by their way of life you offer us an example by communion with them you give us companionship by their intercession show support so that encouraged by so great a cloud of witnesses we will run as victors in the race before us and win with them the imperishable crown of glory through christ our lord and so with the angels and archangels and with the great multitude of the saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this world and drink this cup you proclaim your death oh lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and gabriel our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior’s command and followed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we will be always free from sin and is safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look lord on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always do your peace be with you peace with you lamb of god you take away the sins of jesus give me more speech behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of allah the blood of christ the love of christ impels us so that those who live may live no longer for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised responsive oh my gosh oh let us pray may the holy reception of your mysteries lord instill in us that persevering love with which mary magdalene clung resolutely to christ her master who lives and reigns forever and ever amen thank you dear friends for joining in let us continue praying for each other the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go forth the mass is ended him in unceasing glorious praising fill the heavens with sweet accord holy holy lord
