God Is Able

by smart

wanted me to tell a little story before he starts a sermon and i’ve never told this to anybody except my immediate family uh let me he’s giving me five minutes the story starts out back in 2000 my parents went to hawaii for two weeks on vacation and while they were out in hawaii my dad had heart pain her chest pains and come to find out that he says you’re going in surgery he had a five-way heart bypass he was just about all blocked and he was on the operating table and he lost him three times and he made it through it by the grace of god because he went through them which i understand now and uh he was out there for two months and us kids were saying you know we fly out to hawaii to see them and of course back then we were all raising families and we didn’t really have the money to go and so when he got back i came into the house and there’s one thing i asked him i said god or dad i wanted to have this assurance and let you know that i want to be able to walk with you in heaven holding your hand through the tall green grass of the pasture because we are farmers and we know what that’s like and i said i wanted to hold your hand and he says he assured me so fast forward into last year my dad got sick was kobe and we rushed into the mercy room and the doctor came out and said he’s not going to leave this hospital because his organs were shutting down and so for some odd reason they let us go into the hospital into the nursery room my brother my sister my younger sister myself and of course we got coated too but during that afternoon we got to go upstairs to the covington floor and they said i don’t know why you guys are here but we don’t let nobody here but they let us in there’s room twice throughout the afternoon and so finally we made a decision to put them on morphine and let them comfortably and so they said you gotta leave and so all of us left and this pastor that we have is such a good pastor i called him up and i said hey because they said we’ll not let you back in the room so i called him up i just became like you know how god works he puts something in your mind i said hey can you call the hospital and see if you can get us in to the hospital because i knew my dad was gonna pass and he said i’ll call him so he called me back he says they’ll let us go this is like what nine o’clock at night we left the house and he says they’ll let us know but only two at a time in the room and so me and my brother left and we met a pastor of the hospital and pastor and i went up first and we sat by his bedside and we did the anointing and we asked we asked my dad if he if he accepts jesus christ as his personal savior and what happened next approved that we had a divine appointment i was sitting there and of course i’m crying too but uh i said uh dad you probably you know he wasn’t you he could hear us talk but he wasn’t really wasn’t moving her his eyes were closed and so i says dad i gotta remember you promised that we will be in heaven and go for a walk hand in hand and what my dad did i never saw what happened he leaped off that bed he leaped forward and that was the approval that i got that was a divine appointment that we had and so after that the pastor sang the song he’s saying at a funeral that we asked him to and a total peace came over him after that and he passed within 15 minutes after that and i just want to thank god that when we keep our family and prayers that he does answer ourselves [Music] this is tell me who can make a mountain move out of my way and who can make a miracle because of my faith and when the [Music] and when i’m in trouble who’s right there to help me pass every test god is able [Music] and he won’t fail tell me who can make a river out of a little stream and who can tell the clouds to roll back so that the sun can look at me and who can tell the wind to whistle through the trees and when i’m in trouble who’s that same god that will rescue me god [Music] god is good and all the time god is great let me tell somebody amen yes god is good um we ought to have faith in trusting god even when you don’t understand his timing it’s always according to his timing because god’s timing is perfect amen never too early it’s never too late trust him in your waiting trust him in your wondering trusting in your prayers he will answer you when the time is right when it doesn’t make sense right trust god in isaiah we are reminded in the book uh isaiah says that in the last days good will be called evil and evil called good and we see a whole lot of that nowadays don’t we but give god all your worries all of your stress all of your pain all of your anxiety all of your sins for only he can handle them all and only he can amen would you buy your heads for an added word of prayer father in heaven we praise your holy name and we just thank you and we know that you are able but yet lord you can only do a marvelous work in our lives and use us as a blessing and save us only if you are in our hearts and in our minds so today lord you ask for unity in the church unity in your body and god we ask that we may do more than just listen to those words that you have prepared for us today but that we may take heed being better team players in this church in your body in jesus name we pray amen you relax on a flame even though you don’t know the pilot you relax in a ship even though you don’t know the captain you relax on a bus even though you don’t know the driver why don’t we relax in life knowing that god is in control amen as you guys have heard in the scripture reading um i kind of added on to today’s sermon so there’s two titles uh and i apologize that the holy spirit uh changes the message according to what he pleases and the message is not complete until the message is complete right so until the message is done there’s always there’s it can also be tweaking the god seems fit so uh actually we’re going to take one point that’s going to be taken from verse 19 that’s why we added that verse but i just wanted to tell you guys a little a little bit about the book of ephesians the epistle ephesians paul is writing to the church in ephesus about the need for christian unity and how to achieve it family and friends yes faith is important and it will always be part of the christian journey but here in ephesians paul is focusing more on on grace and yes salvation is also important but paul is at is and he addresses that in earlier of his writings but here the apostle paul is zoning in more on the importance of unity within god’s body paul is focusing more on the church his body for god is the head we already know that christ can accomplish his purposes despite whether we want to be a part of his team or not and all that just to say what we have a choice we have the freedom of will do we want to be on the winning team because god’s team is going to win whether we are a part of it or not but he desires every one of us to be a part of that team amen how many of you guys want to be a part of that winning team we know how it’s going to end you just got to get on board because the ship is going to sail away uh and god’s purposes within his body within his church will be complete and spencer church family today uh that um god is telling us that that this final movement whether he comes in our time our lifetime or not his winning team um if we want to be spencer church family we want to be part of that a team we have to be a blessing into this community together as one not individually but together in one effort um in in nineteen two twenty one i believe it’s uh testimonies vlogging uh nine i believe it says if christians were to act in concert moving forward as one under the direction of one power for the accomplishment of one purpose they would move the world but obviously we’re humans right we’re not in heaven yet we have our challenges we have our uh humanness right so that’s why god is the head of this church so the subject here in ephesians is unity in jesus and paul is writing to the churches that are made up of jews gentiles and europeans slaves and free men all symbols of a broken and disruptive world that was to be restored back to the unity of the unity of christ and that only christ came in that for you and i especially church family if you would please turn me to ephesians chapter 3 and we’re going to be reading uh also verses 19 through 21 and as you heard already i will read it again for us verse 19 to know the love of christ which passes knowledge that you may be filled with all the fullness of god filled with all the fullness of god i’m just going to go ahead and tell you now that’s point number one filled with all the fullness of god let’s continue to verse 20 now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us to him be the glory the church by christ jesus of the church by christ jesus to all generations forever and ever amen filled with the fullness um i want to read you guys from that i made over page 302 i thought it was beautiful and to know the love of christ which passes knowledge that he might be filled with all the fullness of god that’s point number one there are many who think that it is impossible to escape from the power of sin but the promise is that we may be filled with all the fullness of god we aim to load the mark is much higher our minds need expansion that we may comprehend the significance of the provision of god we are to reflect the highest attributes of the character of god amen we should be thankful that we are not to be left to ourselves the law of god is the exalted standard to which we are to attain we are not to walk according to our own ideas but we are to follow in the footsteps of christ the work of overcoming is in our hands is in our hands but we are not to overcome in our own name or in our own strength for of ourselves we cannot keep the commandments of god the spirit of god must help our infirmities christ has become our sacrifice and surety he has become sin for he has become sin for us that we might become the righteousness of god in him through faith in his name he impedes unto us his righteousness and it becomes a living principle in our life christ imputes to us his sinless character and presents us to the father in his own purity a couple more paragraphs we cannot provide a rope of righteousness for ourselves amen there’s no way we can do that for the prophet says in isaiah 64 6 all our righteousness are as what filthy rags exactly there is nothing in us from which we can clothe the soul so that it is it’s making this shall not appear we are to receive the robe of righteousness woven in the loom of heaven even the spotless robe of christ’s righteousness we are to say he died for me he bore my soul’s disgrace that is that in his name i might be an overcomer and be exalted to his throne amen church family it is the privilege of the children of god to be filled with all the fullness of god and then it says in verse 20 or verse 21 now unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us unto him be the glory in the church by christ jesus throughout all ages throughout all ages world without end to the person next to me saying wake up we’re almost there we’re about halfway there uh i’ve heard a saying once and there’s actually a song for those of you who know that gospel song i can’t i apologize i don’t think i can’t remember the title but the song the chorus goes i’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody but as blood-washed believers in christ we become with somebody who should make everybody feel like a somebody amen edie cleveland once said i have seen god for so long do so much with so little i now believe he can do anything with nothing meaning me friends and family the bible tells us that when someone speaks against you to speak well with them when you are mistreated treat them well repay evil with good and god will fight your battles to be filled with this wholeness colossians 3 12 reminds us if you want to turn there write it down quickly colossians chapter 3 verse 12 reminds us saying therefore as the elect of god holy and beloved put on tender mercies kindness humility meekness long-suffering amen and if you want to turn over to isaiah chapter 40 verse 29 if you want to write that down in isaiah chapter 40 verse 29 it says he gives power to the weak and to those who have no might he increases what strength strength amen he increases strength i want you to jump jump over to the gospels that one should be pretty fast right whether they’ve been early devices or not jump on over to luke chapter 18 verse 27 luke chapter 18 verse 27 18 27 says the things which are impossible with men we all know this one are possible with who with god uh family and friends that every monday wednesday and friday i go and give like an hour and a half of cardio at the ymca over in nebraska across the bridge from where we live in sioux city and uh you know i usually pass out blow tracks to the players you you spend time doing cardio with the basketball whoever shows up on monday wednesdays and fridays right so why not you know you get to know the way that the style they play whether they they’re ball hoggers right or if they’re team players or if they’re uh you know the different types of personalities that you have on basketball court for those of you who play sports or or in any uh group competition type of sports game you understand that it takes a team effort right it takes being a servant leader it takes being a good team player but every monday and wednesday and friday and we go i go over not every monday wednesday and friday i’ve only been here only only two years coming august so the ymca basketball at least was kind of disruptive in regards to doing cardio for about a whole year even though some people still showed up but i didn’t play too much but monday wednesdays and fridays we come together and we play basketball and unity unity is there right unity to win while we all get our cardio in uh we find out what kind of team players uh we we are teamed up with that also reminds me that if i didn’t share jesus with them what kind of christian would i be right you spend all that time with them and you don’t mention the name of christ there’s a time to speak of christ don’t get me wrong but when you spend that much time with them and if you don’t witness to them by sharing some literature or just telling them that god is good or something that the lord has done in your life not in an obnoxious way not in the way when you feel that you’re on every school where you’re looking down at that but there have comes to a point where you have to share your faith with those that you come in contact with especially if you come every monday wednesdays and fridays to play basketball with these individuals for two years some of the other players said and they don’t even know each other’s names and they don’t know each other’s names can you imagine that one of the guys told me last yesterday on friday yesterday he was like man two years we played together and i just found out his name was king his name is i was like yeah i think he overheard me because i was asking him hey so is he king k-e-e-n-e he’s like yes it’s king that’s how it’s spelled and he goes i go oh that’s that’s the college that’s the aerial and you know southwestern at venice university it’s right there and it’s spelled the same king i was telling you some people uh in fort worth texas pronounce it as kane say kane are you from canadian or like no it’s king or right so so i made it i would pass out low glow tracks every time i go play so they all know that i’m a pastor and a two church district here in spencer in overwatch city and uh you know i was talking with god and i thought man why not share my favorite devotion with the steps of christ so so far i’ve given out at least six books of steps to christ i made it a duty of mind if i’m filled with the fullness of god not in a humble way of course why not share the steps to christ we got this whole box over at sioux city that is just sitting there collecting up dust right so i took i took the stack of it and i have it in my truck and um every time i go on monday i’ll make it i’ll make it very clear in my mind okay i’m gonna give this there’s three bottles big bottle old bob and an old bob has a son bob that plays they all come and play basketball so so far i gave it i gave it to one of the mobs and uh to canada to keem i’m giving it to some of the other players and i’ll just take one copy and i’ll pray that hey i want to give it to this individual give it to andy that one day just praying and specifically focusing on that one person i’ll just tell them this is my favorite devotion i don’t want you know i don’t want you to feel obligated like you have to take it but would you like to say oh yeah we’d love to have it do you want it back and they said no i got a whole stack in my truck you know it’s yours and of course we can apply that to our church here today and of course this is a warm church this is the church that welcomes everybody right and so i believe that spencer has a beautiful uh dna here and still within this church when we have guests we welcome them uh very warmly but nevertheless i mean community belt doesn’t only have to be at potlucks right it doesn’t just have to be on the weekends uh we got the coffee group that meets monday like every day right almost every day seven days a week or five days a week yeah the coffee bunch every day every day at 3 30. how many of you guys want to join that coffee box you don’t got to drink coffee i go and i drink some water and uh sit down i think i’ve got to know at least the majority of them but uh yeah what are we doing as a church and i know we got all of our uh outreaches and activities but um how good do we know each other my whole i don’t want to spend time on this point but my home church back in the hawthorn i grew up my whole life all of the everyone knew my everyone knows my name but i felt kind of guilty because i got you know i kind of left home for boarding school and went to college got married and did my master’s when at the age of 16 that i had left home so i didn’t really remember everybody’s names but all that just to say uh you know maybe you can go out and eat with somebody in this christian church you don’t get to know each other more uh you know go out for lunch uh pizza ranch i don’t know where it is just go and hang out with each other invite each other to each other’s homes strengthen your relationships in christ and with god and let’s work together as a team amen work together as a team we got some really good team players in this church from everybody here everyone here is a good team player and i’m so real my wife and i are so blessed to be part of this team here where god has stationed here in spencer here at spencer um so filled with the fullness filled with god’s fullness that’s point where one is found in verse 19. together as a church and of course that can only happen individually strengthening each other’s uh relationships our homes they say uh strong families make strong churches right so it all starts back in our home homes our significant others our kids our grandkids whatever home they look like at this point in our lives we can always there’s always room to strengthen our family relations in august 7 1884 st it says each morning consecrate yourself and your family to god amen for that day make no calculation for months months or years for they are not yours one brief day is given you and that one day work for yourself and your family as though we were at your last surrender all your plans to god to be carried out or given up as his providence shall indicate in this matter you may day by day be giving your life with its plans and purposes into the hands of god accepting his plans instead of your own amen no matter how much they may interfere with their arrangements nor how many pleasant projects we have to be abandoned thus the life will be molded more and more after the divine model and the peace of god which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through christ jesus uh there was i think it was about a couple of months ago i was really exhausted and tired and i came home and i think it was a thursday evening it was a good exhaustion of course i think i was coming back from spencer but there were some things that i did the day before that i was just physically tired and mentally tired and i came home and i was uh you know usually we have our morning devotions with our kids and our human devotions with our kids and i came home and uh you know the kids usually wait for me before they go to bed which is not a good idea but as working parents we’re still trying to uh get them into a routine right but uh usually at this point they still wait for me to like go home until they go to bed so i got home and i just hit the mattress that i i was out you know we had one of those emotions where you turn off the lights and then you just say a prayer and then you go to sleep together so we’re all in the same room and uh i was in the bed and uh you know pat was like all right daddy pray so it was quiet for a good 10 seconds and all of a sudden i just said amen he said amen in fact and i was like what kind of prayer is that i said oh it’s a one of those silent prayers where you pray you pray silently and then you say amen but uh what what’s the point of that the unity strengthening your own hopes what use is it for me to come up here and preach to you guys if i’m not practicing what i preach in my own world as an individual that goes for all of us but we all have broken homes and we are in need of christ uh yes we get as weary as tired as we might be god gives us the energy to and uh his endurance and his presence to help us even in our most exhausted times the sda commentary uh in regards to verse 20 when it says he is able the word abel paul frequently emphasizes the ability of god to perform what he has set out to accomplish he sees this as a great encouragement to the early saints who is assured that he is not resting his faith on some weak and a faulty object so god does not know weak uh lowercase uh god he’s the god of heavens that has created the entire world and he’s telling you and i hear today that he he does more he wants more than just to die across for us and to be resurrected and to come back again but he desires for you to accept christ as your personal savior and he desires for you to be a servant leader a good team player as we unite together in this spencer area uh going door to door with a burden or whatever it might be whatever evangelistic effort that you have going on personal or whatever that might be might be to not go off and do it on your own but do it together as a collective group filled with this fullness and god is able to do that for you and i i want to invite you we’re going to jump over to a few more passages and then we’ll bring this sermon to a close and we’ll head on over to our fellowship if you would turn with me to philippians chapter 4 verses 19 and 20 philippians chapter 4 verses 19 and 20 it says and my god shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by christ jesus now to our god and father be glory and forever and ever amen first peter chapter 5 verse 10 and 11 all the way toward the end first peter chapter 5 verses 10 and 11. it tells us what may the god of all grace who called us to his eternal glory by christ jesus after you have suffered a while perfect establish strengthen and settle you to him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever amen filled with his fullness with god was able to do that for us church one more one more verse that probably passage promised that we can all take with us as we go home psalm 121 i will lift up my eyes to the hills from which cometh my help my help comes from the lord who made heaven and earth he will not allow your foot to be moved he who keeps you will not slumber behold he who keeps israel shall neither slumber or sleep the lord is your keeper the lord is your shade at your right hand the sun shall not strike you by name nor the moon by night the lord shall preserve you from all evil he shall preserve your soul the lord shall preserve your going out and you’re coming in from this time forth and even forevermore filled with his fullness god is able to do that for you and i will he won’t do that against your own free will you have to choose you have to choose to allow the holy spirit to come into you into your minds into your hearts i want to invite you all to please stand with me as we sing the same song that we saw earlier that god will take care of you god will take care of you uh and as jonah’s making their way down and as we all please stand uh we can sing these this beautiful song together especially the times that we’re living in right now right i mean now we have churches going back to mass and uh social distancing again with this new uh delta variant and you know all of these uh uncertain things happening nowadays it’s good to know that god has not changed amen
