Hunting Aotearoa Series 5 EP17 Opotiki Big 3 Hunting Competition

by smart

This week we’re in Opotiki at the famous BIG 3 competition. We’ll be hunting with 3 different teams to get the biggest stag or boar, the most bars on a pheasant and the biggest snapper. nIt’s gonna be wicked! The waka (vehicle) of Hunting Aotearoa goes to nthat place that people call the centre of the universe, Opotiki. Hello everyone we’re here in Opotiki of course nand we’re here with the ah… lovely looking gentleman over here, his names Slim, we’re outside his ah lovely establishment where nwe’re actually holding the Big 3 in Opotiki. Hello mate. hello, hello welcome and welcome to Opotiki. Sweet as, how long’s this been going on for mate? Um it’s, it’s been going for a number of years nbut probably started up again um the last 5 years um run out of this bar um and it’s been good for the ncommunity bringing people together and it is teams of 3. Um and this year we’ve got ah record numbers of eighty five teams nso this is only day 1 so it’s looking good. The 1st beast has just been weighed in as nwe’ve seen so it seems promising. A lot of people are still out in the bush and in the sea. Ah the proceeds of this one goes to the local ah college ah touch team, the national um mixed touch team they’ve done real well this year. nEvery year it goes to either rugby, soccer all sorts of sports but mainly with the kids and nits excess of ah five thousand back into the community. Now this Big 3, take us through the big 3 because nit’s actually 4 animals, what’s the story there? Well this is ah Opo (Opotiki) style, the coast style of course. You know 3 goes into 4 and it’s either a stag or a boar, nor a pheasant or the ah elusive snapper. Yeah. Female teams in here as well? Yeah there’s female teams they’re out nthere doing the hard yards and they, they don’t mind getting a bit of blood and guts non them and that’s what it’s all about. Yeah what about those people you call Milton… I mean Cheats? Hmm ah Cheats, funny why that name Milton nkeeps coming up he’s a bit of a legend and ah um but he keeps telling me he’s as honest as the day is long, nso aye gotta take the mans word. I didn’t know you could weigh horses in too. No you can’t. Where did this one come from mate? Oh an old Irish saying, if you drink don’t talk, if you talk don’t drink. nI’m not allowed to tell you. But it’s legit aye mate? He’s legit yeah. I mean there’s no Milton I mean no cheats around here aye? No, oh gee don’t say that name. one hundred and forty kilograms that, mind you if I whip out the old ah eye fillets when they’re not looking nthey’ll get under one hundred and thirty five kilograms twenty mins till cut off time and still the animals ncontinue to come in from near and far. Now check out this snapper! He looks pretty wrapped about that one. nWe’ll come back and check on the weigh ins later in the programme. ten point one four kilograms with the guts in nit was eleven point fifteen kilograms. It is a beautiful new day. A great day to find a nnice fat pheasant with my first group of hunters. Morning everyone pretty nippy this morning nbut ah we’re here with Dig and a couple of his boys and hopefully we’re after a ah nhow big the pheasant mate? How big? Oh thirty six bars, that’s what we’re after. thirty six bars? Yip if we’re up there we’ll be in for the shot, yeah. Well we’re at one bar last night does the count, thirty, thirty five more. Say no more that’s us. So that’s us everyone we’re off to get nole a pheasant for our mate and his team. Yeah, ah my team’s ah Coast to Coast we’re calling it nbecause I’ll be heading off to the other coast after we ah get the thirty six bar today. Um my two young fellas, this is Kenny nah he’s in “Under the Radar” is his team. He’s trying to get a pheasant and this is Brody, num he’ll be trying to catch a snapper later on and that’s us. We’ve just got the two boys going up nthe top with the um with the, the dog. Hopefully they’ll flush something over here. They’ll either get a shot or Howie and nI will get a shot so we’ll see how we go. Hopefully someone will get a shot. Yeah. By Jingoes (by golly) he’s shooting already, noh there’s a duck………and……he’s gone. Too much alright this young fulla. Went to go and shoot at the second one and num missed the shot at the same one. That was a good shot the first one though. But unfortunately ah, unfortunately nthere’s no prizes in the Big 3 for ducks but never turn an opportunity down nto have a feed aye my brother, that’s right. Is that a good tail on it? Yeah it’s a beauty. Was it? Yeah. Beat me to the draw mate, yeah good shot. Gotta find the bugger now. It’s just up there somewhere, quick draw that fella mate ngot to be fast around here or you’ll miss out. But I think this is a, this is the anticipation part out of the hunt, nand they’ve got to be counting the old bars. I’ll show you what the bars are when he comes back. Unfortunately the dogs gone with the young fella nso he’s the shooter and retriever. You got him? Nah not yet. And what’s this?… Ah the one that got away, The pheasant did eventually fall and was ncaught by one of the retrievers, that’s 1 on the board. That was unbelievable this one had dropped down there. I could see his feathers, hunting around I couldn’t nfind the damn thing walked behind a gorse bush and another, another one flew right out of the same spot away from me. nDamn thing, anyway the dog found this one for me. Your bloody team’s a bit of a crack team mate two shots two birds. I think I might put my rifle away I think aye. nTake us through the measuring ah system mate Ah well, start up here. They grab your two longest tails but obviously nit’s the one with the longest ah, the most amount of bars one….twenty eight that’s twenty that’s, nthis one here might be longer but, I mean, who knows they count the two longest ones. Do they? Yeah and see which one, which ones got the most bars on it. I actually um saw how many bars out in flight that’s why I let you shoot. All set mate? Yip sweet mate Howie Morning everyone ,well today we’re going out nwith another group of hunters um in the Big 3 but I can’t tell you exactly where we’re going nbecause every Tom, Dick and Milton will be coming here poaching aye brother. nAll I can say is we’re going deep. So ah what’s the story this morning, nwell first of all what’s the name of your team? Oh Grunter hunters mate. Grunter hunters? Yeah. How successful have you been over the years? Oh we get our 3 aye, always get 3, yip that’s the main thing. Who’s your mate son? Ah this young man Jamie, he always comes out with me aye. Is he the carrier? Sticker, ah young Mikie… Yeah mate …and um Hemi, Hemi Barsdel. What’s with the silencer thing on nthe thing mate are we allowed here or what? Ah yeah, you know but it’s good at other times Howie. So what’s our plan of attack this morning mate? Well, just head up the gully here and hopefully go onto a pig. Pretty misty this morning mind you it helps me, nI don’t actually know how high the hills are. Nice paw mark. So what’s the Big 3 mean to you, to you guys mate? Well, go in it, go in it for a lot of fun. Um last couple of years I’ve been on the committee nah suppose it’s in my best interest for me and my family and the district, brings a lot of people to town, na lot of money, um nah it’s good, good bit of turn over for the weekend. Yeah you had a bit of success? Yeah nah, did alright, bit of spot prizes last year. Um we have some pretty major spot prizes in the Big 3 and we won a thousand dollars towardsnah whatever hunting trip we wanted. This young fella over here is he part of your group, nwhat’s your name again, what’s the name of your group again? Grunter hunters, nah he’s just a tag along for the weekend. Um basically lives at home, just loves nhunting, shooting, he’s not a bad shot. What do you like the most about hunting mate? Shooting and catching. Not carrying? Bro bro bro bro bro pig pig pig. After spending 3 hours in the bush it was my time to shinenand then it was little Jamie’s time to shine. Get him boy, you’re a fast fella alright. nLittle fat one bro, nice one aye, too much mate. Oh too much Howie thank you. Sorry can’t go in the bloody big boar thing it’s a sow nbut still it’s going on the table this one mate. Oh hey it will be good eating boy looks nice and fat. See, you were back there and nyou’re dog ditched you up the top aye? Yeah yeah nah it must have been her that nbrought it down aye Howie, just lucky you saw it. You see, he’s been on the ears aye? Ah yeah yeah. Had a little grab of it and ah he was just bringing it down to us. nWell trained dog mate. Well trained boy. I feel sorry for our mates they’re still up there, nhopefully they’ve got the big boar. I hope so fingers crossed. The dogs get on her sonny boy? ….. we get them up a bit further. Nah that might be another one cause this dog, in a half an hour after you guys went up, nthis dog came up with me and just went up… Yeah she came up to us and dropped down below us, nyeah and mine was coming at the top, up further. Beautiful lush green forest…..amazing fresh water streamsnwhere else in the world can you get to experience hunting in such a beautiful environment. nAnd to top it off, I’m hunting with a great bunch of guys. The grunter hunters. nThank you Competitions like the Big 3 bring a community together, nit provides food for the families, It’s the last day of the Big 3 I’m going pheasant shooting with a fine bunch of ladies. nfifteen mins into it and one of the girls gets a bit trigger happy. The bird was just sitting in the grass having a sunbath, nwhen I started running after it, it flew away, yip no hits. Ooh ooh. Oh nice One down we’ve got our dog in there trying to retrieve it. Over where aunty? Just down there just dropped down into the gorse njust in there…on this side of it. Our dog’s name is called Derek Kingi nick name uncle Doris. Oi, sweet, well done to the dog. Well everyone we had a good morning girls nshot a couple of pheasants something to weigh in anyway but ah nwhat’s the name of your team mate? ah I don’t know if we should hear it on TVnbut we are called the 3 Bitches 3 Bitches? Yip. Is that right? Is that literally because you are or just… It’s literally. Yeah. And how long have you guys been together? Ah me and Cheryl been together 8 years, nSarah came on board 5 years ago. Yeah. And how do you find it competing against the men mate, alright? Competing against the men? nYeah piece of piss no worries there. Give them a run for their money aye? Absolutely yip, came second couple of years ago, nsome very shocked faces. Is that right? Yeah very disappointed men out there. You know what’s it like being the ndaughter of a famous legend mate? Oh it can be pretty embarrassing at times yeah. Is that right? Yeah, yeah. You cop a lot of the flack? I do, I do, I‘ll go places and they ask who I am, nthis was before I was married and I’d say oh Jean Kiri, oh you’re not any relation to Milton are you? nAh no I’m not sorry. And you’ve been fishing with him the last couple of days aye. Tell us a story about something to ndo with a banana or something. Yip yip we were getting ready to ngo out Friday morning and um one of the friends come up and said he nhad some left over lunch we could take it out. We’re out at sea 6 hours no bites no nothing and apparently there’s a legend you’re nnot allowed bananas on the boat. I went to open up our lunch and nthere was a banana cake that Lou had given us and um Dad’s quite conscience nabout you know what gets thrown in the water, plastic etc, well he fired it all in the water, plastic and all. And um I had a banana singlet on underneath and nI didn’t want to tell him in case he chucked me over board too. I’m looking forward to going back and watching the final weigh in and of course you know it’s a good kaupapa (purpose) nit’s all for the community but hopefully the ladies will bring the bacon home or bring something home aye ladies. At the final weigh in, teams are determined to at least complete ntheir Big 3 making them eligible for spot prizes. The animals are coming in hard and fast. Where’d you get that bro? Te kaha. Yeah, next to Milton Kiri. But he had bananas in his boat, nthat’s why he didn’t catch nothing. So how’d you go guys did you manage to fill your card up? Yes we did, we did, we did well, very well. And how big, how many bars on your pheasant you shot this morning? forty one believe it or not. forty one there everyone too much. Not bad aye. And I see you’re all dressed up and pen nand paper in hand and…Back to work now. Yeah we put on our second hat; we’re part of the committee as well out nhere trying to keep everyone happy as well. So you can actually doctor up the marks? Well that wouldn’t be very fair aye. That would not, no, no you don’t want to nlive up to your fathers standards do you? No no I’m the honest one in the family. That’s right, that’s right, well good luck ladies. Thank you. And don’t forget I helped, I helped flush that forty one bar pheasant out. Yeah you did good thank you for that, this is dog number 2. That’s right that’s right. Well everyone we’ll just recap and ah with our nmate Dig we went for a pheasant shoot with; actually we actually got a twenty eight and thirty he dropped me off and he went out again and got a thirty six and a thirty eight I must be a jinx mate aye what do you reckon? I like your story better than mine nbut it was a thirty four and a thirty three so… But you take it when you can get it aye, ntake it when you can get it anyway, you fill your card up? Yeah yeah we did we managed to ah npick up a couple of pigs this afternoon, well this morning and yeah the boys come in with a ncouple of small snapper but we got the 3 both our teams got the 3 so we’re wrapped. It’s a good time to come down and nsee the many animals being weighed in. Parents bring their kids……and a few nfamiliar characters show their faces. I’m glad you’re here mate cause I’d just like to let you know aye mate I’m the only one who sticks up for you in this competition nI don’t know why they these malicious rumors, this fella Milton this and that mate, aye. Yeah, nah thank you Howie I ah appreciate that nbecause ah you know there’s not a lot of guys around that stick up for me they all just, na lot of them sink the boot in when I’m not looking. Is that right? Yeah and ah I see that they say hello to me at the moment nbut um yeah nah it’s all part of it I think aye. They tell me you’re a bit of a prankster too mate there’s no nbloody, bloody truth in that either is there? No, no you know you do the odd one a year I suppose aye? That’s right. Just to keep your hand in. Well good luck for the comp mate and I tell you what if you win a prize… Yeah. …and you hear one lone clap… Yeah. …it will be me clapping for you at the back.
