Tokyo Olympic Village for Athletes Opens | Street View

by smart

greetings everybody welcome to the city of tokyo this is the entrance to the olympic village and um i can’t go through here this is how the buses for the national teams are going to be making their way into the village which opened yesterday um without any ceremony just people started to come and we’re gonna get a look around just a little bit because apparently there’s a lot of a lot of presence police presence in the area but i thought this would be pretty cool uh to take a look and see what it’s like here as the olympics uh get into gear with about nine days before it starts how you doing everybody this is a look around the olympic village uh i hope you enjoy it for the next 30 minutes or so i will take you around and get a feel for it but this is absolutely not like any other ordinary olympics you can already see uh access is quite restricted and probably for good reason but i’m gonna do my best to try to bring you this uh story yeah aloha how you doing everybody um i’ve been following the olympics uh campaign to try to get them here since 2007 when i first ran the tokyo olympics uh sorry the tokyo marathon back then we had i got a pin as a pledge nation uh pledge country for the 2012 olympics tokyo was in there and i remember wearing that after uh after the olympic games and going wow that’d be pretty cool the olympics came here uh like nine years later you know how many well like 14 years later we finally have the olympics here and now uh it’s just kind of a different situation these are police vans and i guess it is to keep i don’t know people like me out i don’t i’m not sure what they’re expecting but i i think it is probably a good idea to have a really strong presence here and they have blockades and and all sorts of things here to prevent uh illegal entry but we can go a little bit further in on the sidewalk wow they’re really standing attention at attention this looks very very official and then the buses go through these tents and i believe there everybody is checked out and uh i guess we need a permit to go further i’m not sure can we go further i don’t we’ll just try [Music] um i can already see that is that the czech republic has the czech republic has flags up there that’s pretty cool so they’ve already decked out their corner of the of the olympic village how cool is that so i don’t see anybody inside of the rooms here uh a couple other banners and flags but if you or is it croatia okay maybe it’s croatia yeah that’s croatia thanks guys for for getting that right i could see a couple of other flags there um there’s more police presence police vans here so let’s go see what we can see here uh this up here is now last time i was here there weren’t a lot of there weren’t oh is that portugal well portugal’s also got a flag there how cool is that wow i see wrx turbos in the house to just kind of walk around and see how things going here that’s very interesting so there’s a lot of checkpoints here as well but i don’t see any signs telling us i guess we can walk around this way just follow the arrows is that hong kong i don’t know do they have any athletes there that’s pretty cool that looks like the hong kong flag don’t i don’t know but i i don’t think a lot of the buses have actually arrived into here but this is as close as we can get into the olympic village i was actually able to walk on the other side a few months ago and get pretty close but it looked almost like a ghost town because it it was ready to go in 20 for 20 uh summer of 2020 and they kind of just shut it down and i believe this is part of the harumi flag project so there’ll be residents moving into this as soon as the olympics start and they have they have contracts that have been on hold for a very long time too there’s a lot of things uh yeah before i could walk down the street here and take you even further down uh into the olympic village but now i can’t in fact just a building down there are those flags on the flags on that building on in the distance there i don’t know but this is not the festive olympics that we were all hoping for right i’ll try coming back here in a couple more in a week or so maybe there’ll be more flags and it’ll it’ll seem more colorful this is a live view of the olympic village um there’s not too many places i can go in fact the bridge is locked off too so usually i would ride my bicycle this is how i would get this is good for me to know because to get to the skateboarding events i would have to ride across this bridge to the the next island over and i can’t do that it’s closed off so it’s a good to to note that you have to take the other bridge to get around there um yeah i guess i don’t know does anybody know what flag dad is right there it’s one little flag so not that much we can see just the croatian team and now we can got i thought that i know that the czech the czech republic team probably it’s it’s on on this side maybe we can see it but the angle is not good to see see the other teams coming in yeah i thought it was hong kong as well up there is again now they have team croatia on the balcony so they have a pretty good uh they got the penthouse but it does look pretty sad and i know that the olympic athletes are quarantined in here i mean not quarantined but they can’t leave and their entry it’s like they’re not even in japan they’re separated from everybody else 48 hours after they finish or are eliminated from the olympic games or finish their their events they have to return to their home countries within 48 hours which to me doesn’t make that much sense i would like them to stay around if they’re been here for 14 days quarantined and vaccinated why not stick around and have some tourists here in japan but look i’m not gonna argue with the with the system that they have i’m sure they put a lot of thought into it right all right here apparently a bus is oh it’s a police car coming in now you can see through here a lot of tents um on the right side i’m sorry on the left side here that’s the olympic bubble is what ryan ryan just called it there that’s exactly what this is it’s a bubble i can’t go in and they can’t come out but the dining hall is you’re straight and then on the right side i believe and the pictures look pretty sparse you can’t really interact with anybody there’s some athletes eighty percent of the athletes have been vaccinated which is a pretty good percentage but there was um some uh an american swimmer who was interviewed recently who said that he didn’t want to get vaccinated and that’s made some people here in japan a little bit worried but nevertheless athletes must compete and if they do it safely maybe it’s going to be okay i don’t know i’m just not going to get bent over out of shape over something that before it happens just i think everybody is aware of the risks and knows that that this could be really uh really really tough if they don’t control it so what i see right now is that it is a very controlled bubble i i to i really i’m disappointed to see this though because it just would have been cool to hang out with athletes at a bar or something and talk about their their stories and things like this but that’s not gonna happen christie writes in here it looks like a lockdown it very well could be yeah let’s see if i can cross the street here take you to the other side and see what we can see go as far as we can go maybe we’ll see some other things on the other side i had a boat i could get get around the island on a boat pretty cool i would like that so let’s go to the other side now all right here’s a map here that seems to to show us the traffic patterns for this yeah a lot of it is closed off there’s not really much i can do let’s just see what we let’s see where we can go here’s where the buses enter into the olympic village it looks pretty official to me so that’s how the buses enter and i guess they’re checked off in there make sure everybody got on the bus no no stowaways i don’t know let’s just go take a look this is the the police station here which is quite large so i know the security is airtight for from bad people see heir to the ron is here welcome thanks everybody for joining us i am sure this is not this has just become a really hard job for all of the volunteers and other people without having visitors coming here i don’t know how many of the volunteers are actually needed i’m not sure what the city of tokyo is going to do with all of these volunteers and what they’re going to be doing if they’re separated from the athletes exactly what are their tasks i think the volunteers themselves don’t know all right cool all right now we can see some more flags from this side so let’s let’s make our way all the way around here tony p welcomed and he’s excited about this i see michael cesano’s here loving the updates on the olympics keep an eye out for vending machines i don’t think there are any around here maybe for security protocol but it’s pretty interesting to be able to document this live and share this with you um again this is the exit this is where the buses come out so leaving isn’t such a big problem here but entering is pretty tough again it’s being dubbed the olympic bubble oh there’s the korean team oh that’s so cool a police bus is in the way so we can see some more flags see if i can get a little bit closer there yeah that’s the korean flag right there and underneath it i think uh something written in in hangul i don’t know if anybody can read that uh the fence is pretty high and then over here is the science this is hilarious it’s written from top to bottom but it says here um we will rock you whoa that’s a bold statement i wonder what country that is seriously we will rock you the sad thing is in a way it does look like a prison i didn’t i’m just reading what the comments are i didn’t say that all right if anyone is official listening to this and monitoring me i think that this is uh it does sort of look you know like a prison it it sort of does there’s so much security here and so much uh uh so many people protecting protecting it it does look pretty official i can’t cross the street before in the past i could cross the street and go all the way in but you can’t do that anymore and if you go into there there are more olympic village apartments over there on this side and a lot of them but again we this is as far as that we can go on this side um but it’s interesting there’s also another tent here do you see this here there’s another tent where buses can come and go and this is another entry point into the olympic village so i found two of them and i’m sure that there might be one more on the other side of the bridge because the the events go there’s a heritage side which this this road will go towards the heritage sides into the um city of tokyo and the other side going this direction goes towards the the bay side so there are other venues on this side i’m guessing that the buses can go in that direction too but we just don’t have a lot of that it looks really beautiful look at the top of this place i wonder what that room is like a workout room or something that looks really nice up there yeah and this flag here is that the the thai flag i’m not sure maybe they put all of the the continents uh together europe is in the middle there and this is the asia continent and over there might be north america i’m not sure um in the distance i can see some flags on that building but it’s it’s gonna be really hard to to make it out even zoomed in there i’ve got a zoom lens on another camera but it’s red and white it could be denmark for all i know yeah interesting let’s go to the front and see what the entrance looks like to this the people with the best view might be in these apartments right here across from the tokyo olympic village for athletes there they got a bird’s-eye view into the action but this year this olympics it’s just not the same even the athletes with one another can’t interact too much not i think a lot of teams have segregated their teams uh so they a lot of teams have their own uh workout facilities they have their own places to train even the foreign press has been cut down from i think it was 8 600 people to or 80 200 people to 4 600 people so almost cut in half with the amount of people that can come here um there was a journalist on good morning america uh i think that’s was that abc i’m not sure which station that is but he was explaining the process required to get into uh tokyo and he’s undergoing a 14-day quarantine the athletes have a three-day quarantine so again i’m not sure why and there goes a bus departing these buses are bringing in the uh athletes into the village look at those cones as a fan of cones i’ve never seen clear ones like this this is unique to japan breaking news james from abc uh the one with the british accent i think that was it watching from denver where i spent the day in colorado springs south of here with a paralympic uh judo cop visiting the olympic paralympic museum then watching him train for an article i’m writing that’s gil from gilaskawa from the uh nikkei publication very cool in here so you can’t see you can see that they’re set up for it i guess there’s roadblocks and things like this to keep people like me out i can’t ride in on my bicycle um i don’t think i can go to the other side can i i think the other side might be blocked off yeah so this is as far as we can go i’m going to take you back to the to the front of the uh gate for those that are joining us calling for food’s in the house hey john thanks for the update looking for the olympics stay safe i’m going to take you to a lot of the venues this is the first of many live streams related to the olympics i don’t know where i can go and where i can’t go and the adventure of trying to figure this out is going to be a lot of fun on on the only japan go channel and i’ve been ready for this for quite a long time i didn’t even know when the olympic village was going to open today yesterday they opened it about i don’t know 16 hours ago the first team started to come in so these athletes that have flags up here on the buildings inside of the rooms they just arrived yesterday and i believe over the course of the of the day and i’m gonna be i know here for another 10 15 minutes maybe we’ll see another national bus arrive but there’s there’s no schedule there’s no plan everything is sort of off the books so that makes it very mysterious and it’s hard for for media can i call myself media media outlets like only in japan go to get the story so i’m very interested in talking with people that are in the olympics maybe through zoom or something and we’ll we’ll figure it out but i’m really curious to hear feedback on what people’s experience inside the olympic village bubble is like again you’re all looking right now at a live view at the olympic village right now and it goes pretty far down into there about a kilometer i would say all the way to those buildings on the on the back side i’m not sure if they’re all athletes but it seems uh several countries have moved in already i see korea i see i think that’s thailand i’ve seen hong kong and portugal and croatia croatia is very patriotic up there staking out the entire top floor looks like portugal has the uh first and second floor and third stories maybe very cool all right let’s let’s walk back to the entrance of this uh to this gate some of the media outlets were allowed in yesterday but from now on i don’t think there’s going to be any more media allowed into the olympic village it’s just become a off-limit zone unless you are an athlete or you’re from abroad and it could be because of special exemptions for visas or it’s it’s kind of become a sore point for uh tigra hoff is in the house watched your channel on twitch as we uh twitch chatted was very odd got to plug you on another platform awesome thank you teg it’s become a sore point with a lot of japanese here that people are coming into the country on special i don’t know with like special visas or conditions three days quarantine or or no quarantine whatsoever not needing to be vaccinated there’s a lot of misunderstanding and not enough information on on the procedures maybe they are out there but we just don’t know where it is so most of the people here in japan are not are not really understanding so that brings of course dissatisfaction and it’s just not off to the best start but i think once the games start things will become a lot more positive we’re live right now outside of the olympic village for those that are joining us there’s a lot of there are volunteers here holding signs and making sure that people aren’t going where they’re not going but i have to be honest with with the the presence around here it is kind of kind of makes me wonder if i’m going in the right direction or not here’s a sign for the olympics tank uh with information saying that the olympics are being held from july 23rd to august so this place will be locked down for these dates and then the paralympics is from um august 24th to uh august uh september 5th and uh you can walk down this road july 23rd yeah that’s when it starts nine days from now it’s just it’s it’s just impressive to see these these police buses in front of the entry point especially when the athletes come in it does look like they’re very prepared that’s good anything riots it is quite hot out here and um yeah the humidity is starting yesterday it was extremely humid uh but that’s just the beginning it’s going to get even worse i think they planned it right at the time where the humidity is going to be at its peak in about nine days from now and going through august i have to tell you the first few days of august have always been sizzlers i love the police vans they’re so weird look at that one’s got like like lights on the top of it extended up like that police fans are cool oh there’s an olympic that was an olympic car mtm uh so this is a special bus that just goes back and forth for the to the olympic village oh you can’t see it’s all gibberish and that’s interesting that’s a city bus that just goes back and forth between the uh between the the olympic village and here’s the entrance that that the buses have to go through so you get a chance from this angle to take a look inside it’s gonna get crazy hot here and there’s a point where we can’t go any further it is hard to know exactly where we can and can’t go you know i don’t don’t know just follow follow this gentleman who has a bento i don’t believe that there are any shopping malls for the olympic athletes i think that they’re pretty much going to be stuck in their bubble they can come they have to come here a certain amount of days before wow these cars for the olympic seal on them that’s pretty cool there’s the harumi post office harumi is a big big post office on the island here so uh the athletes will be able to get their postcards to go back home pretty quickly they’ll probably go out the moment they put it in the box um and then a lot of these other places are i don’t i don’t exactly know what all these facilities are all right let’s let’s let’s go this way just check out see what we can see now the press the media is stationed at big site which is on or the island i guess you call it odaiba island there’s another island here um and there’s 40 4 600 foreign media that are using that the big site which is a 24-hour uh press zone very well connected over there with internet and everything and they’re all staying in different hotels right now quarantining and to get from the hotel to the press offices at big site there are special transportation units that take them so everything is really planned out quite well it’s just sad that it came to this where again this looks like some sort of entry point um for registration i’m not sure for what exactly but it is fascinating to see oh look okay we get if we walk this way um i think we’re gonna be able to see some more and there’s a security guard uh telling people where you can and can’t walk so let’s see if we can walk this way [Music] i’m just going to walk this way until they tell me not to but so you can see i can’t quite see the flags over there all right i think if i walk back a little ways i can see the flags going in this direction hold on a second so it’s really hard to be able to see all right there’s the czech team over there so we got we can see in the corner uh the czech flags very cool i don’t see anybody out on the balcony i’m sure they might have jet lag probably taking it easy if they’ve just arrived into the country again this bridge is closed off here so this is the bridge that would take you towards some of the events like skateboarding and bmx riding and i believe the swimming pavilion is all in that direction too so the czech team is over there that’s interesting and i i’ll try to come back here in a few days and then maybe i will see more flags up here because it is really interesting to be able to see um all the other countries coming in here and showing their colors and showing their pride on the sides of the olympic village balconies [Music] not too many countries are here america doesn’t seem to be here unless they have their own they should put the russian team with the american team together that would be pretty cool that’d be very cool all right this this gentleman just walked across this direction so i’m gonna do the same thing wow so there’s a light that says that there’s a there’s a car coming how interesting is that but it’s not a car it was just a bicycle over here so i’m not sure it’s hard to know it’s hard to know where you can walk but i guess that’s what the security staff is for they’re here to tell you where you can and can’t go so you’re not getting in trouble you’re not getting in trouble walking around here you’re just um okay and this is the gas station so you have to stay in the pedestrian areas you just you just uh have to be guided around by the security and that’s what they’re here to do they’re here to help you out to figure out where you should go and not to go and is that a helicopter coming in cool but the staff is on is really attentive and they’ve got these uh lightsabers obviously red color symbolizes the empire so if they were if they were good they would have green ones all right folks that’s about that’s about all i can show you in this in this first uh live stream covering olympic venues i honestly don’t know where i can go and not go i’m not sure the lay of the land uh and i think over the course of the next week i’ll be able to put together some maps uh because if you do come on site there are maps that will help me plan out um where i can go and not go and and so that i can bring you some of the venues or outside some of the venues more more safely like on on site you have you have maps like this that will help me help guide me around more safely but i don’t think that these are online all right everybody any questions show us a kamini i haven’t been to japan since before the pandemic i’m homesick this is okay i’ll tell you what um so this is where we’re gonna be we’re gonna end the livestream here but i’m gonna i have plans to do a um uh midnight snack run really soon and uh that then you’ll be able to see the convenience store how about that so i’ll do a midnight snack running very soon and we’ll see what we can get at the convenience stores i haven’t done one in quite a while but uh like i i don’t know a lot of what’s happening with the olympic athletes in the village and here’s the thing i don’t think even the athletes know because some of the and if you go to my twitter and i i do encourage you to do that because uh the twitter my twitter account could certainly use some love i just started restarted twitter i didn’t really tweet much at all until about three months ago but on there i i um attached the liaison to the canadian team and she described her her process this is an uh like a retweet on my twitter account she describes her process on on organizing the olympic team to come from abroad into japan and all the challenges that she had and that sort of is a marker indicator of of uh the organization and the preparedness of the of the olympic games i i think despite all of this i gotta say that tokyo has i can’t say it’s it’s been a bad job or a good job we really don’t know yet but considering that they have to stay very fluid in this and make decisions based on the situation on the ground i wouldn’t want to have any of these jobs to make these decisions of course and i’m sure it can’t be easy no matter what decision they make it’s going to be criticized i just personally i wish that they had held this in october which is when the 1964 olympics were held and they just waited until the back the country was more vaccinated but i’m sure they had had their reasons for doing that i was hoping that an olympic team would make their way here but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen there’s some trucks coming out maybe they were loaded with foods i don’t know i’ve also noticed that i’m going to walk back towards my bicycle here this is the entry point into the olympic village bubble all right my bicycle is over here but i’ve also noticed that the olympic stores where all of the goods are has has really supplies are dwindled if they don’t really have much of anything that you can buy anymore at the olympic stores so there’s not much that you can purchase there um i i i don’t i wanted to get it i wanted to get a t-shirt and a plushie but they don’t have any available at the olympic store i think you have to order it online now i’m not sure i was hoping that there would be a fire sale where everything was 75 off but uh it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case that’s such a shame buying is all online now because they don’t want you to go to the shops to buy anything um which is understandable but i’m sure that the olympic mascot i kind of like the tokyo olympic mascot you know um mirai toa i guess it’s his name that’s a pretty unique looking mascot it’s just a shame that you know he’s now associated with these olympics there’s a fire sale in december perhaps after the paralympics i don’t know yeah but i was hoping we’d see a team bus come through here uh there’s only a few teams that have moved into the olympic village but it doesn’t look like we’re getting a chance to see one right now this whole street is pretty much closed off to to traffic non-related to the olympics you can see there’s some uh police cars in the distance up there even riding my bicycle i was kind of nervous wondering if how far we can actually go but um somebody told me just go there there’s security people here to guide you just go as far as you can you think you can go and if there’s people here to tell you not to go into certain areas and you just follow the directions of the people that’s how you make it around the olympic village safely test the limits i guess that would be i i guess don’t push but you know just slightly flick i don’t know but we we just don’t know and ah that’s it so you’re looking live at the olympic village uh the last few seconds of this live stream oh i could see flags down there right check it out wow i really wish i could go inside there finally the olympics comes to japan and we can’t really enjoy them no opening ceremony no uh i’ll know going to the venues inside to watch but uh i promise you this okay oh i i’m here for you and uh i will take you to the venues and try to give you a unique perspective i wasn’t really sure what i’d be able to cover and not cover it seems like i won’t be able to cover much of anything but i’m very tempted to just go to the opening ceremonies to go and just check out um what it’s like outside of the stadium to go as far as i can go and just to bring you some kind of story or feeling behind it because that’s very important i think uh to defining this uh olympics it’s gonna it’s going to take as a spectator this was as far as i could go does it like you know what i mean and that that in itself is a pretty unique story so over the next uh a few weeks i’ll be here in tokyo for most of it and bringing you stories around the venue so giving you kind of an idea um i don’t think i’m going to take any an 8k but i’ve recently started to put 8k videos on this channel for background purposes to give you an idea um i’m not sure i’m going to be doing it i am vaccinated i’ll get my second shot pretty soon this is another looks like a hydrogen bus that’s coming in that’s really really colorful yeah all right so i hope that this is really useful for you um maybe you learned something about the olympics the bubble is real i guess that’s what you learned ah there’s a group of people over there yeah and if you have any questions you can leave them in the comments below and i will see you in the next live stream probably at another venue i think peter and i are planning to go to the olympic stadium peter and i are planning to go to the olympic stadium and and take a look there and in a couple of days um i’ve been really it looks like these are volunteers here i’ve been really disappointed because the olympic stadium is so closed off and off limits to uh to everybody you can’t even get close enough you can’t get beyond a wall even though this is all made with with public money i would have expected that uh before the olympics we’d be able to go up close to it but it’s just been like fenced off for a very long time and that’s been really disappointing um pbg and all his merch he hoarded that’s true he does have an extra amount of he does have an extra amount of olympic merch all right everybody have a good day have a good night and uh yeah leave me any comments below any things that you’d like to see during the olympics and i’ll try to bring that story to you um as i guess these are volunteers for the olympic village how cool is that
